Secondary education is free and compulsory. There are many good secondary schools all over the island, both public and private.
Several private high schools exist in Cyprus. They offer high quality teaching and have excellent facilities. Some private high schools are English and offer English qualifications.
Secondary education is designed for the 16-18 age-group and has a three year programme of instruction. It is provided by high schools known as Lycees and vocational schools. Entrance to the first cycle at the public schools is automatic. There are competitive entrance examinations in Turkish, Greek, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and English.
Post-School education is carried mainly at universities and is organized flexibly so as to provide the widest range of opportunities for further academic training. The Universities are fully committed to modern international learning techniques and provide quality education and research opportunities for national and international students. There is a steady increase in the number of students applying for the universities in Cyprus from abroad.
